Anime Expo 2017

Anime Expo is more than just exhibitors and panels. Every year, they have a massive list of events from concerts to movie screenings to competitions, and Anime Expo 2017 is no different. I’ll try to cut through the schedule so far and highlight a few things that might belong on your “do not miss” list for the weekend.

Something for Everyone

Maid Cafes and Butler Cafes – I’m told these are a must-do and I’ve never been to one. The concept makes sense to me. You sit down for tea or something while adorable or sexy maids or butlers entertain you. Each day, there are four daytime shows for $25 (two maid and two butler) and four evening 18+ shows for $30 (also two of each. Food and drink are purchased separately. A highlight this year is three celebrity maids who will be in the café to serve you, Ayame, Peace, and Yuno. They’re visiting from top maid café Maidreamin in Akihabara in Tokyo. Catch them performing at the 10AM and 12:30PM shows each day. Find more information including schedules and ticket links on the maid cafe and butler cafe pages.

Late Comedy Showdown – This year is the 10th anniversary of this nerd comedy event and it’s been growing in popularity each year. There will be tryouts if you want to participate, and the final competition will be Sunday at 9PM. The competition consists of three rounds: stand up, improv, and final showdown. This is an 18+ event and tickets are $15 and $20 (buy here).

Masquerade – A staple of any pop culture convention is the masquerade, but the Anime Expo 2017 event boasts over $6,000 in prizes and will also include the World Cosplay Summit U.S. Final competition! If you like cosplay and want to see some of the best in the country perform, check it out on Sunday, July 2nd from 8PM – 10PM. Tickets range from $5-$15 and can be purchased through this page.

Anime and Movies

I’m just highlighting the three world premieres listed on the schedule so far, but the full screening schedule will include plenty of old favorites and new discoveries throughout the weekend, so keep checking the schedule as it comes out!

Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card Prologue – After the conflict with Eriol at the Tokyo Tower, Sakura attained the final Clow Cards: The Dark and The Light. Since then, everything’s gone back to normal––but only briefly. While Eriol has decided to move back to England, Syaoran suddenly confesses his true feeling for Sakura and tells her he is moving back to Hong Kong. What will Sakura do? Get your seat early for a chance at some exclusive giveaways! (Saturday, 4PM)

Tokyo Ghoul – This is the live-action adaptation of the popular horror anime, and you get to see it three weeks before its opening weekend in Japan on July 29th! Follow half-ghoul Ken Kaneki as he learns to cope with his new appearance and abilities. This screening is 18+ and will require a wristband to enter! Check the details and trailer on the website. (Monday, 7:30PM)

Welcome to the Ballroom – Based on the blockbuster manga by Tomo Takeuchi which has sold over 1.5 million copies, Welcome to the Ballroom follows a middle school boy entering the exciting and emotional world of ballroom dancing, competing to reach the top. The premiere showing will include appearances by directors and producers of the film, plus exclusive giveaways. Check out the trailer and details here. (Sunday, 10:30AM)

Concerts and Parties

Music guests are scheduled in performances throughout the weekend. Keep checking the concerts page to see if there’s a solo appearance you want to hit. Here are some of the highlights.

Anisong World Matsuri – This is your chance to see this year’s music guests perform in a joint concert at the nearby Microsoft Theatre! There are two performances, Japan Kawaii Live on Friday, June 30th and Japan Super Live on Saturday, July 1st. They have different performers, so check the line-up to see which night your favorite is scheduled. Doors open at 5:30PM and the performance starts at 7PM both nights. Tickets are $45 for loge seating and $65 for orchestra each night (VIP tickets are already sold out).

Neon District – This is a new event this year! Experience a little bit of Tokyo’s underground night life at this electronic dance music party with performances from Taku Takahashi, R3LL, Teddyloid, and more. It will be Monday night from 8PM to 2AM in the Main Hall B, and it’s 18+ with a beer garden. General admission tickets are $40 and can be purchased through the Neon District info page.

Ms. Monochrome/Yui Horie – Come to the live performance panel for the virtual music idol! Her voice and original designer Yui Horie will also be at the panel to answer questions. This is a free panel on Sunday, July 2nd, so be sure to get in line early. Read the full announcement here.

Even after all of that, I’m still only scratching the surface of what’s happening at Anime Expo 2017. I highly encourage you to head on over to the Anime Expo website and click on the “Explore” tab up at the top to see what else is on offer this year.

Anime Expo 2017

Hello fellow Geeks! With summer blazing that heat right in our faces, it can only mean one thing – the summer convention season is truly here! With Phoenix Comicon over and done, we’re marking our calendars with another big event coming up on fourth of July weekend – Anime Expo! Nestled in the busy streets of Los Angeles, Anime Expo is known by all its fans as “a celebration of Japanese pop culture!” With that in mind, we can only expect to see some of the best anime-themed cosplays at this convention! Will you be attending? We sure hope so!

As of now, tickets for Anime Expo are priced at $90 for the full event, $55 for a single-day badge, or $20 for pre-show night. If you plan on attending, we suggest to grab your tickets as soon as possible before the prices go up on June 29th! For anyone planning on bringing younger siblings or children, fear not! There are tickets available for the younglings as well: $90 four-day youth badges (ages 14-17) and $25 four-day child badges (ages 6-13) are both available for purchase on Anime Expo’s registration page. Please note – youth and children badges are not offered in single-day bundles as adult badges are, so please plan accordingly! Badge pickup will occur every day at specified times (see the registration page) at the Los Angeles Convention Center, where we hope to see you all in whatever cosplay you plan on bringing!

For those of you cosplayers who really want to show off your favorite characters, we suggest checking out Anime Expo’s masquerade! Having been a major event within the convention for over 20 years now, the masquerade is a fun and exciting way for cosplayers to get up and compete in a cosplay performance of their choosing. Not only that, but there is a bit of incentive as well (wink wink). You didn’t hear this from us, but the masquerade at AX actually holds a record for the largest cash prize in the entire country for the winner of this contest! So dress to impress, practice that game face, and we’ll see you all at Anime Expo’s masquerade!

But that’s not the only place we’ll be checking out to find some of the best cosplays around. Anime Expo actually has an entire section dedicated to our lovely cosplay friends. This area is known as the “Entertainment Hall,” and houses over 10 original photo sets for cosplayers to hang out at and get some fun backgrounds for their photos! As beautiful as these photo sets are though, please remember to be respectful of all sets, as well as the cosplayers taking photos within them. Time is limited to three-minute sessions per person or group, in order to make sure everyone has their turn, so make sure to be ready to go when you’re next! We really can’t wait to see all the photos that come out of the Entertainment Hall at Anime Expo!

Something else to be excited about is the handful of amazing cosplayers Anime Expo is hosting as this year’s Cosplay Senpais! These cosplayers have been selected to attend AX and show off their skills based on their continual involvement in the cosplay community, as well as the positive impact they have had on fellow cosplayers all around. This year, we’re excited to announce Amber Arden, Corgi Cosplay, Dustbunny, Kiss a Frog Cosplay, Stella Chuu, Queersplay, and Steff Von Schweetz as our 2017 Cosplay Senpais! These cosplayers have been perfecting their craft for years and are nothing short of an inspiration to many other cosplayers around the world! At Anime Expo, the Cosplay Senpais are available for any questions you have regarding cosplay, and many will even be offering tutorials as well. So many sure to check out the Cosplay Senpai page for more information about your senpais!

Cosplay Senpai: Amber Arden
Cosplay Senpai: Corgi Cosplay
Cosplay Senpai: Dustbunny

Don’t forget! One of the most important things to remember when attending any convention is to respect your fellow cosplayer. Just like our fabulous Cosplay Senpais teach us – anyone can cosplay, and each cosplayer puts a lot of hard work and love into bringing their characters to life. So, please, be kind and be respectful towards everyone attending. And, most of all, have fun! We look forward to seeing all of you talented cosplayers this summer at Anime Expo!

Anime Expo 2017

Hey there fellow Geeks! With Anime Expo right around the corner (next week, to be more precise!) we at GNN are taking a closer look at all we can expect to see this year! Anyone else likes to plan out each day? With all the amazing guests and events at this year’s Anime Expo, it seems only appropriate to go through each one and properly prepare our hearts and stamina to run around and soak in all that we can!

For those of you that have been keeping up with our articles covering Anime Expo, or have been checking out their social media pages, you’re well aware of all the amazing guests and performances in store for us this summer. But, what if I told you that there is even more to expect?! That’s right – even with just one week left until the doors open for Anime Expo, the staff has announced yet another amazing set of guests that will be joining us this year. Step off that payload (we’ll forgive you this time) and gather ‘round heroes! It’s time to welcome two of our favorite Overwatch characters to Anime Expo – D.Va and Lucio! That’s right; Charlet Chung (voice actor for D.Va) and Johnny Cruz (voice actor for Lucio) are taking a break from saving the world in order to join us this summer at AX! If you would like a chance to see these awesome heroes, visit Booth #2438 in the Exhibit Hall, where they will be offering autograph sessions throughout the entire weekend. To read more about Charlet and Johnny, make sure to check out Anime Expo’s highlights or visit their own personal pages!

anime expo

But that’s not the only piece of awesome news from Anime Expo’s staff! Along with our heroic voice actors, this year AX is bringing us the amazing talents of Mitsuhisa Ishikawa (President/CEO of Production I.G. for Ghost in the Shell and Psycho Pass), Rui Kuroki (Producer for Psycho Pass and Tsubasa Chronicle), and Kazuto Nakazawa (Animation Director/Character Designer for Samurai Champloo, Kuroko’s Basketball, and Days). That’s three big names from the production industry joining us in the Guest of Honor line-up! For those of you who need a quick rundown on just how amazing these guests are, allow me to shed some light on your darkened world! Misuhisa Ishikawa is not only the mastermind behind Ghost in the Shell and Psycho Pass, but he was also the Executive Producer for the animated sequence seen in Kill Bill: Vol. 1, which has always been a fan-favorite part of the film! Ishikawa’s production world connects strongly with that of Rui Kuroki’s ever since Kill Bill: Vol. 1, where Kuroki worked closely alongside Ishikawa to produce popular titles such as Psycho Pass and Batman Gotham Night. Finally, our infamous Kill Bill film ties in our third name, Kazuto Nakazawa, who acted as the lead director for that same animated sequence. Fun fact about Nakazawa – he is the animator behind Linkin Park’s animated music video, “Breaking the Habit!” Three big names, one big convention! To read more about these guests and where to find them throughout the weekend, visit Anime Expo’s announcements page!

There is just so much to be excited for this year! So, get your maps and calendars ready to mark off those days and schedule your events to make sure you have a great time this year at Anime Expo! To stay updated with new guests and event announcements at AX 2017, make sure to like their Facebook page, or wander over to the “Latest Event News” section on their website. We can’t wait to see all of the amazing guests Anime Expo has in store! For now, let the countdown begin!!

Review: Nekocon 20, 2017. Hampton Roads, VA.

Nekocon is an Anime con that celebrated its twentieth year this past weekend, November 3-5, 2017.  Pre-Con estimates hovered near 5000 attendees, and the guest list was . . . sparse.  The interesting things about this Con lay more in the overall feel of it, rather than the guests.

Perhaps it’s as a result of habitually attending conventions that have become wildly epic in scope, but this blogger was charmed by the intimacy of Nekocon.  Your local mega conventions are fun, and will have high-dollar guests that might be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for people. The people at Nekocon appeared to be mostly involved in simply spending time together, cavorting in the silliest way possible, and very much seizing the day.  There is much to be said about living in the moment with your friends.

Though it was an Anime con, the 501st Legion’s Garrison Tyranus was in attendance, with the Rebel Legion, the Mandalorian Mercs and the R2 Builders  The locals were very welcoming to a weary, time-zone-punchy traveler, and in fact, one of the 501’st finest put on a really fascinating panel on painting props.  You might think that it’s tough to make prop painting sexy, but Brad and Matt put on an excellent show, including a project to do as you sat there, to show you how masking fluid works with multiple layers of paint, and how dilution of paint with Windex looks when the “wash” is done.  They’re also funny guys, so that helped make the panel fly by.

There was some amazing cosplay, including the attached “Ghost Rider”.  Breathtaking. Photography by Lina Berelovich Photography.

The only down side was the tendency of some of the Con staff to be abusive, but that happens on occasion.  It’s tough to expect someone to be happy and glittery for three solid days of dealing with the public.

Overall, the experience was similar to that of a Phoenix Comicon, circa 2005, though PCC staff have never been surly with me.  There was an intimacy and a camaraderie that were charming.

If you like a feeling of friendliness and warmth in your Con experience, you might think about checking this one out next year.

POKÉMON ADVANCED CHALLENGE COMPLETE COLLECTION | Just In Time For The Holidays!

POKÉMON advanced challenge anime review

Synopsis: In the POKÉMON ADVANCED CHALLENGE COMPLETE COLLECTION, a shadow hovers over Ash, May, and friends as they continue their journey through the Hoenn region, and it’s not just that of Mt. Chimney—both Team Magma and Team Aqua put plans into action with our heroes caught in the middle! When not foiling evil schemes, Ash and May chase their personal goals, with Ash battling for three more Gym badges and May winning her first three contest ribbons. The group also gains new Pokémon like Torkoal and Bulbasaur, but could they be too much to handle?

Continuing their release of full seasons, Viz media puts out yet another great full season of Pokémon. Following Ash, Pikachu, Brock, May, and Max through the Hoenn region, Pokémon: Advanced Challenge spans 52 episodes (Episodes 41-92) of the Advanced Generation series. Originally airing in 2004, the season has come out before on 10 different DVD’s, but this will be the complete collection that is out in a box set of 6 DVDs. The box is a standard DVD, plastic, case in a sleeve that matches. Personally, I prefer the book style cases that fold out into a longer piece. They seem to be more sturdy, and I just like the feel. I am slightly surprised they did not do something like that, or individual small cases in a larger box, with the amount of DVD’s that was involved with this particular collection.

Personally, this is one of my favorite regions in the Pokémon franchise. Hoenn has beautiful artwork and well designed Pokémon while keeping balance with the older, more classic, Pokémon. Also, the theme song is pretty awesome. Viz still holds onto the classic 4:3 aspect ratio, despite the non-widescreen viewing, I found it’s still easy to watch. The black bars on the side don’t bother me much and bring me back to the days of waking up early to pop on the TV and watch my favorite Pokémon trainer. Although this is a little bit more of a nostalgic, personal, preference than anything. The colors and animation are par for the course; always bright and entertaining. The voice acting hasn’t changed much, even from the original series, so any old time fans will recall the voices quickly and new fans can expect a lot of enjoyment out of it as well.

For about $50 USD, you get your money’s worth of content. However, with the back of the box stating the collection having 23 hours of content, the total content is actually about 19 hours. Again though, you still get great value for the box set and just in time for a holiday gift for any Pokémon fan! You can find this box set online and in stores such as Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, and Target.

Taiyou Con Preview

To give you all a little sneak peek into what you can be expecting from Taiyou Con this year, we’re going to start with a little breakdown:

First – the Masquerade! Come one come all, the Masquerade at Taiyou Con is the place to be to show off your cosplays, old and new! Though the registration slots for Taiyou Con’s Masquerade are currently closed, you can still attend this main event to cheer on your friends and favorite cosplayers. Personally, I always enjoy watching the Masquerade at Taiyou Con – I’m always amazed by the talent and razzle dazzle these cosplayers have!

Next up on the breakdown – the Nikko Festival! Inspired by traditional Japanese outdoor festivals, the Nikko Festival is the first of its kind at Taiyou Con this year. At this festival, you can enjoy fun games such as ringtoss, goldfish scooping, and a shooting gallery. And the best part? Game tickets are included with the purchase of your Taiyou Con attendee badge (24 to be exact), with more tickets available for purchase should you wish to keep the games going! To find out more about the games offered at this festival, simply visit Nikko Festival‘s page on the Taiyou Con website.

And what would Taiyou Con be without its amazing lineup of guests?

Returning for another year of mayhem and shenanigans, the famous Youtube group Mega64 will be gracing the Mesa Convention Center to bring us more laughter and fun-filled memories! Along with these comical men, we are joined this year by the talented LA-based voice actor Robbie Daymond. Robbie’s talent can be heard through popular characters we all know and love such as Spiderman, Tuxedo Mask (Sailor Moon), Akechi (Persona 5), and the best boy Prompto (Final Fantasy XV)! But don’t worry, that’s not all! There are many more amazing guests who will be attending Taiyou Con this year, as well as a cosplay senpai who you don’t want to miss! To check out the entire lineup of guests, just visit the Guests page on their website.

Again – Taiyou Con is being held this weekend (January 5-7) at the Mesa Convention Center in Arizona. Get your tickets online or at the door, and be ready for a weekend full of anime madness!

crunchyroll anime awards 2018

Some details about the event:

  • When: Crunchyroll Anime Awards ceremony takes place the night of February 24

  • Where: Montalban Theater in Hollywood. It will also be live-streamed for those who can’t make it!

  • We’ll be highlighting shows that live on Crunchyroll and shows that don’t, including some nominees like:

    • My Hero Academia Season 2 – Crunchyroll

    • Made in Abyss – Amazon

    • Little Witch Academia – Netflix

  • You can find more information about the event here: http://www.theanimeawards.com/
  • Below is what some of our judges are saying about the CR Anime Awards:

Andrew McDanell – Co-Founder of OtakuSpirit.com

“Never in my many years of anime viewing would I imagine taking part in such an exciting event as the Anime Awards. Any chance to give credit to the anime we know and love is something special. For me, I don’t see it so much as a competition, but rather a celebration.  A celebration that has no losers. While not every title can make it to the top, there really isn’t a title that doesn’t bring joy or connect with someone personally.”

“Anime as a medium has come a long way for the western audience.  Availability is great, the volume of releases is overwhelming, and there’s nearly something for everyone to enjoy.  As such, the necessity for an Anime Awards has never been truer.  It’s important to not only highlight fantastic titles but give credit to the creators who pour their efforts into such a unique medium of entertainment.”

Zac Bertschy – Executive Editor at Anime News Network

I think it’s fair, at this point, to attribute a pretty sizable chunk of anime’s current cultural ubiquity to the relentless effort of Crunchyroll. It makes perfect sense to me that they’d be the ones (at long last, in my opinion) to give this vibrant, challenging, constantly-evolving artform a proper celebration. It’s something I’m proud to participate in.

Yssa Badiola – Lead 2D Animator at Rooster Teeth Animation

At least 200 series have been produced in 2017, and it’s high time we acknowledge the hard work, passion, and dedication that goes into each project. As a professional animator and an anime fan, it’s great to know that the Anime Awards are here to highlight the series you should take risks on.

Miranda Sanchez – Editor, IGN

On The Anime Awards’ value:

Of all the media I’ve covered, I rarely see the same level of camaraderie as I do with the anime community. Events like The Anime Awards are a wonderful way to bring the community together. Being able to talk about some of the best anime of the year with other fans that are just as passionate is exciting! Regardless of the results, events like this are also a great opportunity to learn about anime that you may not have considered watching before.

On differences between this year and last year:

The process for choosing nominees and winners this year is much more rigorous. I’ve felt a lot more involved in helping curate a great selection of nominees with the other judges. Unlike other awards, The Anime Awards is unique in that it favors fan opinion over a panel of judges or separate awards between a panel and fans. I like that it brings both groups together so that the community as a whole has a chance to choose the best anime of 2017.

On being a judge:

I enjoyed contributing to The Anime Awards last year, and I think this year will be even more fun! I’m honored to have the opportunity to collaborate with other great people working in the anime industry to determine this year’s best anime.

crunchyroll anime awards 2017

Yet another year has passed us and with it, more amazing anime to consume. Another year of fights, dramas, crying, being transported to another world and shows that seemed to have absolutely come out of nowhere. While I did not have the chance to watch every anime that has come out this past year (a nearly impossible feat), I certainly got my fill and was very pleased with the past year’s shows.

Crunchyroll, essentially the forerunner of anime simulcasting, once again has held it’s Anime Awards vote. This year, to my pleasant surprise, they did a mixture of voting as well as a panel of judges. The reason I like this much more is that it avoids, for the most part, popularity contests and “overhyped” shows from winning through sheer momentum.

For those interested in seeing Crunchyroll’s videos, they have a short recap of the winners here as well as the VOD of the entire show on their Twitch.tv channel here.

I’ll be going over the categories this year with nominees as well as showing my own vote and going over the winner, of course. Without further ado, let’s get going to seeing the results of this year’s Crunchyroll Anime Awards!

Best Girl:

Nominees:

Atsuko “Akko” Kagari – Little Witch Academia 2

Ochako Uraraka – My Hero Academia 2

Moriko Morioka – Recovery of an MMO Junkie

Serval – Kemono and Friends

Tsuyu Asui – My Hero Academia 2

Chise Hatori – The Ancient Magus’ Bride

My vote: Moriko Morioka – Recovery of an MMO Junkie

WINNER: Ochako Uraraka – My Hero Academia 2

A fairly expected result from this year. My Hero Academia was pretty much the big name this year for anime as well as the Anime Awards and it will be a show that will be repeated multiple times. Not to say I have any gripes with the victory for this category, my only criticism is having two characters from the same show, a theme I’ll be reflecting in some later categories. Instead of either Ochako or Tsuyu, I’d have liked to have seen Shouko Nishimiya from A Silent Voice or  Mitsuha from Your Name. I don’t think the result would have changed, but overall, a solid victory for Ochako.

Best Boy:

Nominees:

Shoto Todoroki – My Hero Academia 2

Rei Kiriyama – March Comes In Like A Lion

Kazuma – Konosuba: God’s Blessing On This Wonderful World!

Izuku “Deku” Midoriya – My Hero Academia 2

Fafnir – Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid

Yakumo Yuurakutei – Descending Stories: Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju

My Vote: Shoto Todoroki – My Hero Academia 2

WINNER: Shoto Todoroki – My Hero Academia 2

Similar to the Best Girl category, I don’t like having two characters from the same show. However, the pick of the litter was slightly thinner this year than most. In this case, again, the outcome was pretty obvious. Todoroki is a character deserving of the title Best Boy 2017.

Best Manga:

Nominees:

Golden Kamuy Vol. 1

My Lesbian Experience With Loneliness

My Brothers Husband Vol. 1

In This Corner Of The World

Descending Stories: Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju

Delicious In Dungeon Vol. 1

My Vote: Abstain

WINNER: My Lesbian Experience With Loneliness

My expertise doesn’t lie so much in the manga. Naturally, if I don’t know much about something I don’t vote on it, nor do I feel the right to field an opinion on it.

Best Hero:

Nominees:

Izuku “Deku” Midoriya – My Hero Academia 2

Gin Minowa – Yuki Yuna Is A Hero: The Washiro Sumi Chapter

Atsuko “Akko” Kagari – Little Witch Academia 2

Kukuri – Magical Circle Guru Guru

Chise Hatori – The Ancient Magus’ Bride

Nanachi – Made in Abyss

My Vote: Izuku “Deku” Midoriya – My Hero Academia 2

WINNER: Izuku “Deku” Midoriya – My Hero Academia 2

Essentially a no-brainer. With a title of “My Hero Academia” it was pretty weighted to win the category. Though similarly to before, not an undeserving victory.

Best Villain:

Nominees:

Stain – My Hero Academia 2

Tanya Degurechaff – Saga of Tanya The Evil

Bondrewd – Made In Abyss

Cartaphilus – The Ancient Magus’ Bride

Hiro Shishigami – Inuyashiki

Usagi – Juni Taisen: Zodiac War

My Vote: Tanya Degurechaff – Saga of Tanya The Evil

WINNER: Stain – My Hero Academia 2

This is one of the categories where I heavily disagree with the winner. I think Tanya makes a much better villain than Stain. Tanya has much fewer morals than Stain, albeit that doesn’t necessarily make a “better” villain, depending on how you define a villain. In attitude, morals, and actions, Tanya has been shown to be much better of a villain as shown in even trying to defy “God” for the sake of getting what Tanya wants. Although again, most of this depends on how you define a “villain”, I think that Tanya should have won.

Best Action:

Nominees:

My Hero Academia 2

Land Of The Lustrous

Blood Blockade Battlefront & Beyond

Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron Blooded Orphans 2

Attack On Titan 2

Fate/Apocrypha

My Vote: Fate/Apocrypha

WINNER: My Hero Academia 2

While I’m not mad at the result, I think Fate/Apocrypha and Land Of The Lustrous had overall better action scenes. My Hero Academia had better highs in terms of the big fights, you knew they were big, they were gorgeous, they were creative, but the more moderate fights and action was par for the course while Fate and Land Of The Lustrous, had better overall action scenes. So, reiterating, I don’t think My Hero Academia was undeserving of the title, it just depends on how you want to define the category.

Best Drama:

Nominees:

Descending Stories: Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju

March Comes In Like A Lion

Made In Abyss

The Ancient Magus’ Bride

Scum’s Wish

ACCA: 13-Territory Inspection Dept.

My Vote: The Ancient Magus’ Bride

WINNER: The Ancient Magus’ Bride

I did not watch a whole lot in this category, to be frank. However, The Ancient Magus’ Bride is an absolutely amazing drama with the music and scenes and animation all giving you that magical feeling and really adding to the atmosphere of this show as a drama. That said I wouldn’t necessarily be mad if it didn’t win, mainly because I’m unsure of the other shows besides Made In Abyss.

Best Comedy:

Nominees:

Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid

Mr. Osomatsu 2

Little Witch Academia 2

Konosuba: God’s Blessing On This Wonderful World!

Gamers!

Tsuredure Children

My Vote: Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid

WINNER: Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid

This was probably one of the closest categories. I watched a good number of the shows on this list and I greatly appreciated pretty much all of them. What made up my mind was the faults in shows. Konosuba relied too much on its tropes from season 1, and Gamers just had to continually rely on coincidences and certain themes that just overall really bother me (in this case, having confusion and misunderstandings resolved by simply talking).

Best Slice Of Life:

Nominees:

Recovery Of An MMO Junkie

Tsukigakirei

Girls’ Last Tour

Kemono Friends

Sakura Quest

Interview With Monster Girls

My Vote: Recovery Of An MMO Junkie

WINNER: Girls’ Last Tour

100% Girls’ Last Tour should have won and they did. I’m really glad it did. The show is awesome and quintessential slice of life and done extremely well with an interesting story and great art style. I voted for Recovery Of An MMO Junkie because it’s just a guilty favorite of mine that I greatly enjoyed, just enjoyed in a different way than Girls’ Last Tour.

Best Continuing Series:

Nominees:

March Comes In Like A Lion

Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron Blooded Orphans 2

Dragon Ball Super

Case Closed

All Out!!

Naruto: Shippuden

My Vote: Dragon Ball Super

WINNER: March Comes In Like A Lion

I have a soft spot for Dragon Ball. I have not seen March Comes In Like A Lion, so, again, not much of an opinion here on the winner. I have heard it’s great, seemingly so with how many times it is in categories around the Anime Awards.

Best Opening:

Nominees:

“Shadow and Truth” by ONE III NOTES – ACCA: 13 – Territory Inspection Dept.

“Here” by JUNNA – The Ancient Magus’ Bride

“Shinzou wo Sasageyo!” by Linked Horizon – Attack on Titan 2

“Peace Sign” by Kenshi Yonezu – My Hero Academia 2

“The Other Side of the Wall” by Void_Chords feat.MARU – Princess Principal

“Imawa no Shinigami” by Megumi Hayashibara – Descending Stories: Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju

My Vote: Abstain

WINNER: “Peace Sign” by Kenshi Yonezu – My Hero Academia Season 2

I abstained from this vote mainly because I generally skip OP’s after listening to the first one unless it is absolutely incredible. While some were good, this season, nothing really grabbed my attention.

Best Ending:

Nominees:

“Step Up LOVE ” by DAOKO x Yasuyuki Okamura – Blood Blockade Battlefront & Beyond

“Ishukan Communication ” by Chorogonzu – Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid

“Kirameku Hamabe” by Yuiko Ohara – Land Of The Lustrous

“Hikari, Hikari” by Yuuka Aisaka – Recovery Of An MMO Junkie

“behind” by Karin Isobe, Yuna Yoshino, and Lynn – Just Because!

“Kafune” by Brian the Sun – March Comes In Like A Lion. Season 2

My Vote: Abstain

WINNER: “Ishukan Communication” by Chorogonzu – Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid

Similar to OP’s, I don’t listen to much unless it’s amazing. I prefer watching the content.

Best Animation:

Nominees:

Land Of The Lustrous

My Hero Academia 2

Little Witch Academia

March Comes in Like a Lion 2

A Silent Voice

Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid

My Vote: A Silent Voice

WINNER: My Hero Academia 2

I think that My Hero Academia won on popularity in this category. As I stated earlier, I think when they really focused on animation, especially fight scenes, it was very good. But as a whole, A Silent Voice and Land Of The Lustrous had better animation overall. It’s important to understand that animation isn’t only fighting scenes, it’s showing the scene and cinematography in a way to convey the rest of the show. When My Hero Academia wasn’t focusing on action, I thought it was above average, but not blow my socks off like some of the shows on this list.

Best Score:

Nominees:

Made in Abyss

Little Witch Academia

Land Of The Lustrous

The Ancient Magus’ Bride

ACCA: 13-Territory Inspection Dept.

Re:Creators

My Vote: Re:Creators

WINNER: Made In Abyss

Made in Abyss absolutely deserves this win. In terms of score, it certainly was the best. I think that Re:Creators had a shot, but it had the same issue as with Kill La Kill where the few songs that are very very good, are overplayed. The few choice songs in Re:Creators are better, however, Made In Abyss creates an environment with its music, not just complimenting it.

Best Film:

Nominees:

A Silent Voice

Your Name

In This Corner of the World

Girls und Panzer der Film

Kizumonogatari III: Reiketsu-hen

Fate/Stay Night: Heaven’s Feel – I. Presage Flower

My Vote: A Silent Voice

WINNER: Your Name

Am I mad about this win? No. I still stand by that A Silent Voice is a better film than Your Name. Your Name’s hype was much larger than A Silent Voice. That’s not to say Your Name wasn’t amazing, for all the people starting to sharpen their pitchforks. This year was actually incredible with all the films. I greatly enjoyed this category and all of these belonged on the list.

Best CGI:

Nominees:

Land Of The Lustrous

Kado: The Right Answer

Re:Creators

Attack On Titan Season 2

Knight’s & Magic

Inuyashiki

My Vote: Land Of The Lustrous

WINNER: Land Of The Lustrous

Normally, I’m not a huge fan of CGI in anime because most of the time it’s done extremely poorly. I’m talking to you Berserk and Fate/Stay Night (2006), but Land of the Lustrous does an absolutely amazing job and every scene is beautifully polished. This is how CGI is done.

Anime Of The Year:

Nominees:

March Comes In Like A Lion 2

Made In Abyss

Land Of The Lustrous

My Hero Academia 2

Descending Stories: Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju

Little Witch Academia

My Vote: Made In Abyss

WINNER: Made In Abyss

Made In Abyss deserves the title this year. A show that didn’t have much hype swept the anime scene by storm with an amazing world that did an absolutely stunning job at showing, not telling. The music was on point and the animation was fantastic and it was all around an amazing show to get sucked into.I highly recommend it to anyone.

VIZ Media Launches New Shoujo Manga Series THE YOUNG MASTER’S REVENGE

young master's revenge mangaVIZ Media Launches New Shoujo Manga Series The Young Master’s Revenge as of March 6th.

Immediately upon first glance, I recognized Meca Tanaka’s (田中メカ Tanaka Meka) art style as I flipped through the pages of The Young Master’s Revenge (Kimi no Koto nado Zettai ni). She is famous overseas for Faster than a Kiss (another great Shoujo Manga Series.) Viz Media has also happened to license one of her other manga series Meteor Prince.

This series originally had it’s run from Aug 23, 2014, in the magazine Lala and is ongoing. Viz Media has licensed the series and is accepting pre-orders as of Feb 27, 2018.

So what is the hype surrounding this series? Recently “Revenge”, or sadistic Shoujo Manga series have been picking up in popularity. A good example would be Takane to Hana, where a young woman is in an unlikely relationship with a sadistic rich man. These series are following a couple that pick-on each other or have bad intentions before falling in love. These series tend to highlight what an unhealthy relationship looks like while being humorous, the key is that they obviously aren’t taking themselves seriously.

In The Young Master’s Revenge, we are introduced to the main character Tachibana Leo who has been away from Japan for ten years. Upon his return, he only has one goal in mind, seek revenge on his childhood friend(Tsuwabuki Tenma) for humiliating him as a young kid.

Upon reading the 1st Volume, it’s clear that this is a lighthearted comedy and the reasons for Tachibana Leo’s revenge is presented as completely ridiculous. The main reason for the silly disposition is that Tsuwabuki Tenma isn’t what you would respect considering the hatred of the main character. The side character that Leo hates so much is airheaded and naive. I personally enjoy Tenma’s “naive” personality, it contrasts nicely with Leo’s ulterior motives.

In the press release, Nancy Thistlethwaite(Senior Editor) is quoted saying, “What begins as Leo’s revenge becomes a voyage of self-discovery and endearing love.”

Which leads me to believe that we will see a positive character change from the young main character. With the positive feedback and unique storyline, it looks like The Young Master’s Revenge is already on it’s way to becoming another hit from Meca Tanaka.

One thing that the manga does a great job of is making fun of the usual Shoujo stereotypes. Although we often see girls attempting to get revenge for rejection, in this case, Leo is the one who is spiteful. It’s a fun change from the usual “makeover” manga that is prominent in the Shoujo genre. The manga doesn’t skip a beat and quickly gets its summary over so that you can watch the characters interact. I get the impression that the reason for the story isn’t as important as the journey. Finally as usual Meca Tanaka’s art is visually charming with it’s wide-eyed, and long framed elegance.

If you’re a fan of Shoujo Manga, then you’ll certainly want to check out VIZ Media’s Launch of The Young Master’s Revenge.

FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST: FULLMETAL EDITION is a hardcover, deluxe collector’s edition with brand-new cover art, new color inserts and color versions of select pages previously printed in black and white, and behind-the-scenes character sketches from series creator Hiromu Arakawa. Volume 1 (which contains one and a half of the original graphic novels) will be released exclusively in print with an MSRP of $19.99 U.S. / $26.99 CAN and is rated ‘T’ for Teens. Future volumes will be published by VIZ Media on a quarterly basis.
